Abstract
It is widely acknowledged that access to safe, affordable and modern energy is one of the main ways to improve the quality of life in poor countries, by enhancing economic situation and therefore reducing poverty. Electricity is one of the most promising solutions to get access to modern energy due to its diverse features. However, one billion people are still living without access to electricity and three billion people without access to clean cooking facilities. The majority of these people live in Sub-Saharan Africa, and a large portion of their income is spent on inefficient, expensive and polluting energy sources. In history, the economic growth of all developed countries has been based on fossil fuels. Currently, the concern of climate change makes alternative energy sources and in particular clean energy necessary. If developing countries follow the traditional pattern as has been in developed countries, the environmental impacts will be enormous. Therefore it is essential to develop sustainable energy alternatives with particular focus on affordability, so that people living in poverty can also access to clean energy. The scope of this thesis was to study the relation of energy use and economic growth in developing countries. The research was carried out as a literature review, using existing empirical studies concerning the topic. The literature supports four different hypothesis about the causal relationship between energy use and economic growth, these are: energy-led, income-led, bidirectional and no causalities. However, no clear result concerning the causality could not be made. The share of each causality was around one fourth from the reviewed literature. Even though it can not be said that an increase in energy consumption leads to economic growth or the other way round, a strong linkage between these two factors can still be found. This is mainly because the income level of country influences to the energy usage habits, and energy is necessary for economic activities.

Turvallinen, kohtuuhintainen ja nykyaikainen energiansaanti on yksi merkittävimmistä keinoista parantaa köyhien maiden ihmisten elämänlaatua, parantamalla maiden taloudellista tilannetta ja vähentämällä sitä kautta köyhyyttä. Sähkön nähdään olevan kaikkein lupaavin ratkaisu tähän sen monipuolisten ominaisuuksien vuoksi. Noin yksi miljardi maapallon ihmisistä elää kuitenkin vieläkin ilman sähköä ja noin kolme miljardia ihmistä ilman puhtaita keittomahdollisuuksia. Suurin osa näistä ihmisistä asuu Saharan eteläpuolisessa Afrikassa, ja merkittävä osa heidän tuloistaan kuluu tehottomiin, kalliisiin ja saastuttaviin energialähteisiin. Perinteisesti teollisuusmaiden talouskasvu on perustunut fossiilisiin polttoaineisiin.
