Abstract
Spatial audio reproduction can be used to recreate real life auditory environments in a laboratory setting. The reproduction is produced with an arrangement of loudspeakers, that is able to pan sound sources around the array. The quality of reproduction is affected by the complexity of the speaker arrangement, as well as the panning method used. This thesis studies the effects of a rigid spherical scatterer in simulated spatial audio environments. The sphere is used to mimic the effects from a human head. Five different virtual loudspeaker arrangements are utilized in Matlab computing environment. Two different methods are used to pan virtual sound sources around the speaker arrangements: Higher Order Ambisonics (HOA) and Vector Base Amplitude Panning (VBAP). The obtained results show that adding a sphere to a spatial audio reproduction field introduces more errors from the contralateral side of the sphere. These errors are caused by the shadowing effect of the sphere, which is stronger in higher frequencies. In the case of directional microphone responses, it is shown that a sphere steers the microphone capturing areas to the ipsilateral side of the sphere, and the contralateral responses are attenuated. In a diffuse field, a scatterer is shown to increase the measured pressure levels in higher frequencies. In practical loudspeaker arrangements with 16-36 speakers, the results show good reproduction quality in two-dimensional arrangements. This is, when the speakers are positioned in the horizontal plane, where the source signals are also positioned. Three-dimensional setups are able to recreate a sound field with decent efficiency, but in order to obtain higher performance, speakers should be placed in the assumed source directions. In addition to the simulations, measurement results from a real loudspeaker setup in an acoustically treated listening room are presented. The results show that room responses from a reverberant space have a big impact on the measured responses. The anechoic simulations are therefore difficult to compare with the measurements. However, the measurements show that the whole human body has an effect to the responses next to the head, which cannot be replicated with just a simple sphere.

Tilaäänikenttiä voidaan käyttää realistisen äänikenttien luomiseen laboratorio-olosuhteissa. Kenttä voidaan luoda kautinjärjestelmällä, jonka avulla äänilähteitä voidaan sijoittaa ympäri kenttää. Reproduktion laatu riippuu kaiutinjärjestelmän sommitelmasta, ja käytetystä lähteiden sijoitusmetodista. Tämä diplomityö tutkii kiinteän pyöreän sirottajan vaikutusta simuloiduissa tilaäänikentissä. Siroavan pallon tarkoitus on simuloida ihmisen päästä aiheutuvia heijastuksia. Tästä syystä kaiuttomia simulointeja on vaikea verrata mittaustuloksiin.
