Abstract

The thesis deals with making art for other species and with other species. The production part of the thesis consists of the intervention project Cats of Athens 18 (2018) and its documentation. Cats of Athens 18 is a series of interventions produced for the cats that live free in the city of Athens. The thesis process began from the artistic practice, that generated the questions about the essence and ethics of interspecies art. The aim of the thesis was to investigate, what kind of meanings does interspecies art have. The focus is in approaches that aspire equal encounter with the other species and has no ownership or other subject-object relationship. The thesis exposes that the artistic practice between human and non-human is not unambiguous. Many ethical and linguistic complexes are intertwined in it. The equal practice is challenged by the humanistic human-animal relationship and the lack of the common language. The concept of participation is complex, especially when the artist and the participator don’t share mutual manners to interact. Inspired and led by the artistic practice, the research process provoked many interesting perspectives from the human-non-human relationship in both art and the western culture history. They operated as a mirror to the examination of the philosophical meanings of interspecies art in the posthumanistic worldview. The reflection-in-action during the artistic process and the retrospective reflection, together with the survey of the other artists’ productions, offered examples and support for the discourse of the thesis. The thesis suggests that art intervention as an art form offers an equal and viable way for interspecies art practice. The equal interspecies art requires methods for cross-species communication. It transpired, that the cross-species art offers an alternative to spend time with other species. The artistic practice can offer a safe space for interspecies encounter. At best it enhances the interspecies relationship. An intervention project can open new possibilities to interspecies interaction in a city space. In an urban environment one does not always notice the others’ presence. When the artist composes a documentation of the intervention addressed to cats, and exhibits it in a gallery space to human audience, it makes a remark for other species living and operating in the city as well.
