Abstract

This thesis is an arts-based research made within the field of fashion and textile design. The design project and the written part of the thesis that reflects upon the design project, are based on an idea of researching an expression of a moment in clothing. The motivation behind the work is to explore an impression and perception of environment and the body in clothing and to understand how in the idea of the wearer, the viewer and the designer are intertwined in the experience. The inspiration and framework for the project was a visually and verbally expressed feeling of a moment, a setting in a certain time and place. Essential elements of that moment were for example night time, rain, city lights and movement. The thesis aimed at internalizing the mood and the meaning of the moment through manipulation of textile surfaces, draping and photography. Along the design process a way to look at a dress not just as the embodiment of our social being but also as an embodiment of the interactions between the inner being and the outside environment was developed. The connection between the practical design project and the phenomenological approach to perception and experience taken in the written part of the thesis emerged as a result of reflecting upon thoughts and feelings that surfaced while working with materials and shapes. The phenomenological approach to thinking is a good basis for a project involving ideas about perception, moment, sensing body and mind and material experiencing of the world. The tangible outcome of the thesis is a womenswear collection of six looks and the new embroidery technique further developed along the collection project. Reflecting the practical part of the thesis the design process is seen as a research method for understanding the essence of a dress. Through the collection and material design process the approach to dress is formed into a living and searching attempt to find a way beyond the level of symbolic and figurative expression towards the level of experiential meanings. The research is an invite to understand clothing as a multi sensual experience. The idea about clothing and material as a form of creating meanings and knowledge is a link to an ongoing discussion on the meaning of personal experience and carnal knowledge. The embroidery technique developed opens up links and possibilities between hand craft like working and the industrial production.
