Abstract

This thesis is an artistic investigation towards the newly built Väre, it's ecologies of users working, socializing and inhabiting space altogether. Bound in the space and the bodies using that space are regulations and structures that produce the normativity of that place which can be hard to converge from once they get firmly established as an accepted status quo. These invisible dogmatic frameworks guide and inhibit the freedom of our (artistic) thinking: what is seen as possible and what as problematic, not worth the trouble. The production part of my thesis, Performance almanac tries to be one example of art as research, possibly loosening some of the knots in these invisible structures. As I settle in the multi-faceted (social) architecture of the Aalto university and Väre-building with the uncompromised principles of Performance almanac, I ask what are the possibilities of initiating change with performing art, live art and performance art. What kind of situations does create or propose for the bypassers and customers of Väre? How does is produce change or question the environment of hallways and offices where performing arts doesn't yet exist? With this thesis I strive to: A) Research the ways I approach making art, to clarify and update the processes to form a more sustainable and conscious relationship with the meta-work or secondary work that goes into being an artist. B) Present the Performance almanac, the production part of my thesis as a project in which performance art acts as a research tool distilling information about the space (Väre) and the bodies that use and inhabit that space. C) Be utopic and demanding towards the platforms where art is displayed. There needs to be a possibility to exist on artistic platforms (gallery, festival, event, organisation etc.) in diverse ways. This freedom needs to be held tightly in the hands of artists themselves, as the power of (un-)definition can work either for or against the artists.
