Abstract
People spend about 90 % of their time indoors. Indoor climate has significant effect on people’s health and wellbeing as well as productivity and concentration. Significant amount of Finnish school buildings is suffering from unhealthy indoor climate. This can cause students and teachers to suffer from different health symptoms and decreased concentration. As built environments’ energy demand accounts for about 38 % of the total energy demand in Finland, buildings have a significant role in slowing climate change. Demand controlled ventilation offers substantial energy conservation potential as it reduces the unnecessary ventilation without decreasing the quality of indoor climate. However, demand controlled ventilation systems have not gained mainstream popularity due to poor experiences. Systems have had problems in CO2 based control, sensors, variable-flow dampers and building automation. Also, as the systems have grown more complex, failure diagnostics as become more difficult and errors can be hard to locate. The objective of this thesis was to study do demand controlled ventilation systems work as desired in two Finnish school buildings. Operability was analyzed based on indoor climate parameters, and pressure difference. Moreover, possible sources of undesired operation of the system were sought. The main methodology was indoor climate measurements conducted in two classrooms in each of the case schools. Three indoor climate parameters and pressure difference over building envelope were logged for one week in each room. Also, equipment and system parts, as well as building management systems were reviewed for possible errors. Results of this study indicate that indoor climate conditions stay within desire range to a large extent. Indoor air temperature stays within the guideline values of Decree 1009/2017. Also, CO2 concentration stays mostly within decree’s guideline values, and within classification of indoor environment level S2 excluding one case room. In one of the classrooms concentration rises above the limit of S2 level most of the time. Moreover, there were some failures in the operation of the equipment such as on/off-dampers. Also, some of the system elements such as temperature based control of ventilation were not functioning correctly which affects the operation of the system. Thesis indicates that demand controlled ventilation systems provide potential to reduce energy demand of the buildings without decreasing the indoor climate quality. However, as systems become more complex their installation and repair need to be carried out carefully, equipment have to operate reliably and maintenance has to be comprehensive.

Tämän takia sisäilman laatu on yksi rakennusalan tärkeimmistä prioriteeteista. Rakennettu ympäristö kattaa noin 38 % kokonaisenergiankulutuksesta Suomessa, joten rakennuksilla on merkittävä rooli ilmastonmuutoksen hidastamisessa. Yhdessä luokkahuoneessa hiilidioksidipitoisuus nousee yli S2 tason suurimman osan ajasta.
