Abstract
Puroympäristö on vuosien varrella muuttunut kaupungistumisen myötä. Koivukylän aseman seudulle sijoittuu urbaani keskustamainen viheralue Ojalehto.

This thesis deals with the development potential of Vantaa's Rekolanoja stream as an element off the urban environment. The main goal of the thesis is to develop plans for the green areas of Rekolanoja, which will enable the stream and its surroundings to enhance the enjoyment and wellbeing of the inhabitants of the area while it also serves as a green network that helps maintain the area’s ecosystem. In the beginning of the thesis, the importance of stream environments is studied. The subject is approached by examining streams as related to citizens’ wellbeing and social interactions, as well as streams’ ecological impact and their role as part of the urban landscape. Firstly it is noted that peoples’ interest in maintaining their health has been increasing and is likely to increase further. Consequently active recreational use of green spaces is growing. On the other hand, many citizens appreciate places for calming down and communality. It is acknowledged that green areas must offer recreational opportunities for different age groups and different kinds of users. Secondly, in this section, the ecological aspects of small-scale water resources are examined. Benefits of urban streams that relate to the surrounding natural environment are highlighted. In the end of this first section, the thesis assesses the importance of streams as producers of ecosystem services in the urban environment. In the second part of the thesis, examples are presented of stream area projects that have been realized in Finland, Denmark and Germany. This section also explores Vantaa’s citizens’ wishes and future expectations for green areas. It was not possible to arrange a direct dialog or survey with citizens of Vantaa within the scope of this thesis, but instead material has been utilized drawing on previously arranged discussion events with citizens as well as a study completed in 2018 that sought to envision Vantaa’s future possibilities. In the third part of the thesis, the history of Rekolanoja area as well as available analytical information about the area is examined. Rekolanoja lies in the bottom of a scenic and ecologically diverse valley. The stream environment has, over the years, been shaped by urbanization. Surroundings dominated by farm land have over the years changed into mainly lush urban forests. The fourth part of the thesis presents a conceptual plan for the Rekolanoja area. According to the “lifeline” concept of the plan, Rekolanoja is to become an element to enhance the quality of life for citizens. The network of green areas connected together by the stream offers citizens great possibilities to enjoy nature. The stream and its surroundings constitute a multifaceted environment that provides well-being equally in numerous neighborhoods along its way through the city. By concentrating areas for recreational activities along the stream to be primarily situated in the most built areas, the conservation and vitality of the more sensitive nature-worthy green areas will be ensured. A coherent, high quality and comprehensive plan for pedestrian routes is important for citizens’ use of the area. The plans for Rekolanoja that are presented focus on three distinct zones with different characteristics. In the Koivukylä station area there is an urban green area Ojalehto. Increasing the functions of the stream area and the utilization of the open space will increase well-being by providing more possibilities for urban activities and social interactions. The second area is the narrow green area of the Metsopuisto park. The plan presents it as a pedestrian and educational park to serve the residents of the adjacent elederly home and kindergarten. The final section of the general plan outlines the recreational areas required in the new residential area and provides recommendations for their dimensions. The solutions can be used to guide land use planning. The final section of the thesis focuses on considerations that emerged during the work, such as controversies related to the integration of natural areas within the built environment, and how the attitude of the people and the appreciation of small waters are crucial to the survival of the stream. At the end, we also look at the backgrounds and the process of the design work that was done for Rekolanoja.
