Abstract

The strong increase in the popularity of mobile handsets in the beginning of the millenia caused fluctuations in operator market as well. Observation and following of consumer price levels is important both from the market point of view and economics. This study examines the consumer price level changes in the Finnish mobile communications subscriber market between 2000-2009. During this time window several incumbents left the market and the number of companies was reduced to 3. The game theoretical analysis of the markets is provided as well as an analysis of the changes in marketing. The focus of the study is on Teliasonera, Elisa and DNA. Saunalahti bought by Elisa in 2005 is also included in the study. The study reveals that the data correlates rather well with the theory. Game theoretical signals to raise concumer prices were not found in the study. Instead ARPUs were found to decrease steadily staying below the German ones, which served as a reference point. Towards the end of the time window the rate of change of the ARPUs seemed to decrease. The focus of marketing shifted away from price oriented marketing towards images of quality and tie-in deals.
