Abstract
Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a method to study brain activity. The MEG measurement is done using a helmet-shaped sensor array around the subject’s head. One goal of the MEG study can be to characterize the brain activity at the cortex, which is called source estimation. The source estimation is affected by head movements, since in a typical MEG system the head can move freely. To avoid errors in the source estimation due to head movement, the movement needs either to be compensated for by modifying the measurement signal at the sensor level or integrated in the source estimation process. In this work, a source estimation method that takes head movement into account in the source estimation process was designed. The method alters the used estimation model according to the head movement to produce estimates without movement-related errors. Currently, some movement compensation methods, such as signal space separation method, use only one head location in the source estimation and compensate for the movement in other ways, for example by interpolating the measurement data at the sensor level. This can reduce the spatial accuracy of the resulting estimates. We tested the performance of our method using a state-of-the-art movement compensation method, the signal space separation method, as a reference. The results imply that the source estimation could be enhanced by using head position information to build the estimation model instead of interpolating the measurement signal. However, the source estimation depends on reliable noise estimation, which for now differs for the compared estimation methods and complicates the making of conclusions. The work provides new information about how the head movement should and could be integrated in the source estimation process.

Haasteena on kuitenkin luotettava kohinan estimointi, mikä vaikuttaa lähdepaikannuksen onnistumiseen menetelmässämme. Työ tarjoaa uutta tietoa siitä, miten pään liikettä voisi hyödyntää MEG-lähdepaikannuksessa.
