Abstract
A less familiar artist of the Finnish Golden Age, Georg Sigurd Wettenhovi-Aspa, true to his time, built a unique wilderness atelier for himself at the turn of the 20th century. Once Wettenhovi-Aspa passed away, the atelier and Vilniemi estate were willed to the Union of Finnish Art Associations (UFAA) for the recreational and artistic use of disadvantaged artists. However, the atelier was underused, leading to its decline and eventual demolishment in 1981. In 1994, UFAA constructed a lakeside cabin to reactivate Vilniemi, and today it serves as a popular summer destination. However, the cramped cabin is insufficient to compensate the lost atelier and to be used for artistic work. In comparison to the neighbouring properties, Vilniemi entails extensive forestlands, offering a unique opportunity to restore the wilderness atmosphere and build a new atelier. Thus, in autumn of 2017, UFAA commissioned two master’s theses from Aalto University for a new atelier design and one for the plot’s landscape design. This master’s thesis demonstrates one of the atelier proposals. Following the client’s wishes, the thesis design was to be high-quality, follow sustainable practices and be mindful of its historical and natural context. It would be part of an international residence exchange, for which it should be unique. The 1890-1910’s wilderness atelier culture, the old Vilniemi atelier in particular, forms the theoretical framework of this thesis. The thesis examines archive discoveries on the Aspa atelier, artist home examples, and literature from biography, art history and architecture. The goal for the thesis design gradually became the integration of creative labour and rest. Thus, the aim was to design a site-specific retreat that serves as a catalyst to a simplified life close to nature. The spatial concept is based on a simple organisation of a vast, multiuse loft-space within the centre of the building and the secondary spaces for individual experiences on the perimeter. The building is atmospherically divided into the luminous atelier and warm living spaces, which connect to the ruins of the Aspa atelier foundations, reconstructed as a terrace platform. An active relationship is formed between the new and old atelier. Much like the former atelier, the main architectural element of the new atelier is its prominent roof, the aspen creating an inviting and strong character for the building. Following the ceremony, mystique and monumentality of the old atelier, the new atelier it is enclosed by towering spruce forests and becomes the focal point of the site located up on the hilltop.Vähemmän tunnettu kultakauden taiteilija, Georg Sigurd Wettenhovi-Aspa, rakennutti ajalleen tyypillisesti itselleen ainutlaatuisen erämaa-ateljeen 1900-luvun vaihteessa. Kuolemansa jälkeen, Suomen Kuvataidejärjestöjen Liitto (SKjL) peri Vilniemen tilan ja ateljeen vähävaraisten taiteilijoiden virkistys- ja työskentelykäyttöön. Ateljee jäi kuitenkin vähäiselle käytölle ja luhistui ajan myöten johtaen sen lopulliseen purkamiseen vuonna 1981. Vuonna 1994, SKjL pystytti Vilniemen rannalle saunamökin, joka palvelee tänä päivänä liiton jäseniä kesäkuukausina. Liian pieni saunamökki ei kuitenkaan sovellu työskentelykäyttöön. Verrattuna naapuritontteihinsa, Vilniemi on suhteellisen laajaa metsäistä aluetta, tarjoten oivan mahdollisuuden palauttaa tontin erämaatunnelmaa ja rakentaa uusi ateljee. SKjL tilasi 2017 syksyllä Aalto yliopistolta kaksi ateljeesuunnitelmaa ja yhden maisema-arkkitehtuurisuunnitelman. Tämä diplomityö esittelee yhtä kahdesta ateljeesuunnitelmasta. Asiakkaan toiveiden mukaan, ateljeen tulisi olla korkealaatuinen, kestävien periaatteiden mukainen sekä ammentaa historiallisesta ja luonnollisesta kontekstistaan. 1890-1910 erämaa-ateljeekulttuuri, erityisesti Vilniemen vanha ateljee, luovat työlle teoreettisen viitekehyksen. Työtä varten on tutkittu tontin ja vanhan ateljeen arkistoasiakirjoja, muita ateljeetalojen esimerkkejä sekä perehdytty kirjallisuuteen elämänkerran, taidehistorian, sekä arkkitehtuurin aihepiireistä. Vähitellen, diplomityön suunnitelman tavoitteeksi muodostui luovan työskentelyn ja rentoutumisen yhteensovittaminen, sekä paikkalähtöisen retriitin luominen, joka voisi kannustaa yksinkertaistettuun elämäntyyliin lähellä luontoa. Suunnitelman tilakonsepti perustuu yksinkertaisuudessaan harjakattoisen rakennuksen keskelle sijoittuvaan monikäyttötilaan ja rakennuksen liepeisiin sijoittuviin yksityisempiin aputiloihin. Rakennuksessa vallitsee kaksi tunnelmaa: valoa tulviva työtila sekä intiimit ja kotoisat oleskelutilat. Toiminnot vuotavat ulos ateljeen kivijalkaraunioihin, joita on osittain rekonstruktioitu terassitasanteeksi. Uuden ja vanhan välille muodostuu aktiivinen vuorovaikutussuhde. Vanhan ateljeen tapaan, uuden rakennuksen keskeisin arkkitehtuurielementti on sen prominentti haapakatto, joka luo kutsuvan ja vahvan luonteen rakennukselle. Seuraten vanhan ateljeen seremoniallisuutta, mystiikkaa ja monumentaalisuutta, kuusivaltainen metsä syleilee uutta ateljeeta, josta tulee koko alueen kiintopiste Vilniemen kukkulalla.Description
