Abstract
This thesis is based on VROOOM! Children’s Book project, to be published in the spring 2018. The text of the book consists of phonetic noise i.e. sounds in their written form. The design of VROOOM! strives to enable an accessible environment for the reading adult and the listening child through the choices made in the storytelling and the book design. In this study, phonetic noise is investigated as one of the methods used in book design for children. During the research, discoveries relevant to the book design project were made. To begin with, even though VROOOM! has some text in it, in its nature it is closer to a wordless picture book than a picture book with written narrative. In general, when compared to picture book with text, wordless picture book seems to encourage participation and dialogue in a shared reading environment. These features of wordless books can be explained to some extent with the inexplicit nature of the wordless narratives. In comparison to the narrative texts, wordless narratives are expected to guide the readers to interpret and fill in the gaps in the stories. Lastly, there are uneven power roles between reading adults and listening children in shared reading environments. The adult tends to have power over the child who is less experienced and unable to read. The findings in this research have been applied to VROOOM! Children’s Book. The design of the book strives to create a reading environment that encourages dialogue where power roles lose their relevance. By means of phonetic noise and visual narrative, the book aims at creating a reading environment, where stories can be shared and new experiences gained.

Tämä opinnäytetyö perustuu VROOOM! -lastenkirjahankkeeseen. Sen tuloksena julkaistaan keväällä 2018 kirja, jonka teksti koostuu foneettisesta melusta eli äänestä sen kirjallisessa muodossa. VROOOM! Kirja pyrkii tarinankerronnan ja muotoiluvalintojensa kautta mahdollistamaan helposti lähestyttävän lukukokemuksen. Tässä opinnäytetyössä foneettista meteliä tutkitaan yhtenä lastenkirjoissa käytettävänä ilmaisukeinona muiden joukossa. Tutkimuksen myötä ilmeni lastenkirjahankkeen kannalta olennaisia seikkoja. Ensinnäkin, vaikka VROOOM! -kirjassa on tekstiä, se on luonteeltaan lähempänä sanatonta kuvakirjaa kuin kertovaa tekstiä sisältävää kuvakirjaa. Yleisesti ottaen, sanattomat kuvakirjat näyttävät kannustavan käyttäjiään vuorovaikutukseen ja avoimeen keskusteluun enemmän kuin tekstiä sisältävät kuvakirjat. Nämä piirteet voidaan tietyssä määrin selittää sanattoman kerronnan avoimella luonteella. Sanattomat kertomukset vaativat lukijoitaan täyttämään kuvalliseen kerrontaan jääviä aukkoja. Lopuksi, jaetussa lukutilanteessa valta jakautuu epätasaisesti. Lukutaitoisella ja kokeneella aikuisella on enemmän valtaa lukutaidottomaan lapseen nähden. Tutkimuksen löydöksiä on sovellettu VROOOM! lastenkirjan suunnittelussa. Tavoitteena on ollut luoda puitteet, jossa valtakysymykset lakkaavat olemasta merkityksellisiä. Foneettisen melun ja visuaalisen tarinankerronnan kautta kirja pyrkii luomaan tilaa yhdessä lukemiselle, tarinoiden jakamiselle ja uusille kokemuksille.
