Abstract
Työ esittelee lukijalle miten antiikin Rooman aikainen akvedukti toimii ja mitä eri osia se sisältää. Kanavisto on jaettu selkeisiin osiin, joista jokainen muodostaa oman lukunsa.

This thesis examines the composition and workings of ancient Roman aqueduct. It is divided into chapters which focus on different parts of the aqueduct channel system. Both the technical structures and architectural elements found in aqueducts are examined. The thesis is based on sources from a wide range of disciplines such as History of Technology and Architecture, Archeology, Filology, Hydrology and Statistics. Each discipline has its strengths and weaknesses. These different points of view are forged into a synthesis, providing a fuller understanding of the topic compared to a monodisciplinary approach. In addition to secondary literature, primary texts from Ancient times are also used. The research method has been devised by the author and is meant to facilitate the synthesis. Some of the findings of this research are presented in the form of original illustrations. The study also contains photographs and a glossary.
