Abstract

The Master of Arts thesis studies Hospital Clown costumes and the relevance of costume designers’ involvement input in the development process of Hospital Clowns costume and character. The thesis introduces the project, New Costumes for Hospital Clowns that renewed the visual identity of Finnish Hospital Clowns. The redesign was created by a group of costume designers that included one MA student, three BA students and a costume design lecturer, who was also the artistic director of the group. The designer group worked with 36 performers, who were divided into a group of 5–9 clowns for each designer. The basis for the new costumes were the already existing clown characters. The goal of the project was to find a unifying visual style for the clowns that was lacking, because all of the performers had designed their original costumes by themselves. The thesis examines the process of building a well-defined and renewed costume on top of an old one. Costume design is not only about the visual appearance of a character, but requires a profound understanding of the innermost character. The thesis is written from the author's own point of view, but the emphasis is on the whole design group’s work and experiences. The thesis contains a brief overview of the history of clowns, as well as information about the Hospital Clowns. It describes the New Costumes for Hospital Clowns project and work process. At the end, the new costumes are presented, and the role of a costume designer in the project is reflected upon, along with what value it brought to the end result.
