Abstract
Optimoinnin tavoitteeksi asetettiin kevytkaasun massavirran minimointi. Optimointia varten valittiin yhden tasepäivän koostumukset ja optimoitiin laitoksen toimintaa kolmella eri rajoitesarjalla. Rajoitesarjat muodostuvat jäähdytysveden lämpötilasta, joka vaihtelee vuodenaikojen perusteella. Tislauskolonnien tulvimiskertoimista luotiin myös yhtälöt, joiden avulla voidaan simulointiohjelmasta seurata välipohjien hydrauliikan rajoituksia.

The literature review focuses on how modelling and simulation is carried out. Furthermore, some simulation models of Fluid Catalytic Cracking units were reviewed and their variables and constraints compared between each other. The experimental part begins with introduction to the Porvoo refinery FCC reactor instrumentation purge gas system. Details of the purge gas system were investigated, such as the composition of fuel gas utilized as purge gas and the piping of the purge gas system. Mass flow calculations were carried out using the details discovered through the investigation. Independent variables and constraints were presented for the optimization of the FCC Vapour Recovery Unit. Maximum heat transfer capacities of the heat exchangers and limitations of distillation column hydraulics are studied. Moreover, product specifications are considered as well. Simulation of gas plant was carried out with a single FCC reactor effluent composition which is taken from a mass balance study conducted by collecting product samples from the process. The objective of the optimization is to minimize dry gas output. Optimization was carried out for the determined reactor effluent composition with the investigated variables and constraints. Three different sets of values were determined for the constraints to match the seasonal variations of the temperature present in the refinery’s cooling water system. The temperature of cooling water fluctuates in a logical manner throughout the year. Equations were developed from collected data to predict distillation column flooding factors directly in the simulator.
