Abstract
Päivittäistavaran verkkokaupan kasvaessa toimitusketjun osien automatisointi on kiinnostava mahdollisuus kannattavuuden parantamiseksi. Alan matalien katteiden ja huonon ennustettavuuden takia automaatioinvestoinnit on kuitenkin suunniteltava tarkkaan. Lisäksi elintarvikkeiden automatisoituun keräilyyn ja toimitusketjuun liittyy erityispiirteitä, joita tavanomaisessa verkkokaupassa ei tarvitse huomioida. Tässä diplomityössä tarkastellaan potentiaalisia automaatioratkaisuja päivittäistavaran keräilyyn nämä reunaehdot huomioiden. Tarkastelluista ratkaisuista syvennytään tarkemmin automaatiolla avustettuun aluekeräilyyn. Automaattikuljettimilla avustettua aluekeräilyä simuloidaan tätä varten luodulla tapahtumapohjaisella simulaattorilla. Simulaattori hyödyntää aineistonaan Digital Foodien asiakkaan keräilyvaraston tilaus- ja valikoimatietoja. Tulosten perusteella arvioidaan, miten aluekeräily toimisi nykyisenkaltaisilla tilauksilla ja valikoimalla. Toteutetun simulaattorin havaitaan antavan hyödyllisiä tuloksia aluejaon tasapainottamiseksi.

The rapid growth of the e-grocery business calls for novel supply chain automation solutions to improve profitability. Investments need to be considered carefully due to the unpredictable growth of the business and its characteristically low profit margins. Traditional automated fulfillment and supply chain solutions are not directly applicable to e-grocery with its various special requirements. This master's thesis examines multiple potential automation solutions for e-grocery order fulfillment while considering the special characteristics of the grocery business. One of the solutions -- zone picking assisted by automatic belt conveyors -- is further investigated with help of a discrete event simulation model. The simulation model is purpose-built to utilize order and assortment data gathered from Digital Foodie's customer's darkstore warehouse. Simulation results are used to assess the viability of automation-assisted zone picking in a warehouse with similar parameters. The simulator is observed to produce useful results for balancing product allocation in the zone picking system. It is also noted that accurate simulation results crucially depend on having good quality assortment and order data. Simulation results suggest that zone picking could be used to improve the efficiency of the warehouse examined in this work, and that zone picking would enable a substantially higher throughput in the warehouse. However, the results are not directly comparable to the current situation due to uncertainties regarding the values of picking-related simulation parameters. It is therefore suggested that empirical experiments be conducted to determine more accurate values for these parameters.
