Abstract
Lopuksi esitetään, miten Nokian rakennuttamat toimitilat vaikuttivat suomalaiseen toimistoarkkitehtuuriin.

Offices can be interpreted as one of the most significant building types of the 20th century. Just as industrialisation was symbolised by factories and their chimneys, offices can be seen as post-industrial landmarks that constitute a visible part of the urban landscape and function as a work environment for more than half of the adult population in more economically developed countries. The rapid growth of Nokia Ltd coincided with a disruption in white collar work and a marked increase in knowledge work caused by rapid developments in information networks and office technology. Nokia built several office and R&D buildings around Finland during the second half of the 1990s as the existing building body didn’t meet the requirements of the working methods in this new era. After the recession of the 1990s, Nokia had a substantial role in creating a new identity for Finland that was based on knowledge work and innovation. The buildings Nokia built were one embodiment of this identity . This group of buildings, their construction and the aims that were set for them form the core of this thesis. This thesis investigates how the changing nature of work, technological development and new organisational theories affected the office environment and their design solutions. As part of the conclusion, the effects that Nokia’s office buildings had on later Finnish office design are described. In this work, the offices Nokia built during the 1990s are contextualised and reflected on the developments in office design and the aims set for work environments during the 20th century. As a basic principle, this thesis holds offices as a reflection of society and era, not just a product for filling the functional needs of an organisation. This thesis is geographically limited to the buildings Nokia built in Finland. It also includes buildings that were funded by others but built for Nokia when the end-user was known during the time of construction. Chronologically, the thesis focuses on the 1990s, when Nokia’s growth was at its most rapid and construction activities were at their peak. The thesis consists of a literature review that presents a history of office architecture as well as the changes in office work at the end of the 20th century. To set a background for Nokia’s activities, a short history of the company is also presented. The most important sources of this thesis are twofold: interviews of architects and former employees of Nokia who worked on the company’s real estate, and the buildings themselves, investigated through drawings, photos and project summaries in ProjektiUutiset and Arkkitehti magazines.
