Abstract
Jäähallit poikkeavat rakennuksina etenkin sisäolosuhteiden ylläpidon ja energiatehokkuuden hallinnan kannalta paitsi normaaleista asuinrakennuksista, myös muista liikuntahalleista merkittävästi. Hallitilan jääradan tavoitelämpötila on luokkaa -5 °C, rata-alueen oleskeluvyöhykkeen ilman puolestaan luokkaa +5 °C.

As buildings, indoor ice rinks differ significantly from residential buildings, but also from other sports facilities, in particular due to their unique needs for indoor climate maintenance and energy efficiency control. The target temperature for the ice rink is about -5 °C, while the temperature of the air in the occupied zone above the ice rink is kept at about +5 °C. The difference in these temperatures causes a continuous need to cool the ice rink, and heat the air surrounding it. The cool temperature of the air inside the hall also causes challenges for moisture control. The refrigeration unit maintaining the temperature of the ice rink produces a significant amount of waste heat, which can be recovered and utilized in the heating needs of the building. The purpose of this master’s thesis was to research how the indoor climate, the operation of technical systems and overall energy efficiency of indoor ice rinks can be monitored. The literary review discussed indoor ice rinks as buildings, as well as how their indoor climate can be controlled and what the energy consumption effects of indoor climate control are on a theoretical level. In addition, all technical systems relevant to the operation of an indoor ice rink were presented, existing studies related to energy consumption of indoor ice rinks were examined, and the role of indoor ice rinks within the building regulations of Finland was discussed. In the experimental part of the thesis a measurement plan for monitoring the operation of indoor ice rinks was formed. The field measurements were carried out in five indoor ice rinks. Four of the case subjects were or had previously been associated with moisture problems. Three of the case subjects were discovered to have problems maintaining an optimal temperature, either regarding energy efficiency or moisture control. The system for waste heat recovery could be further developed in four of the case subjects. In addition, a number of case-specific problems were discovered. Potential for energy saving was determined to be present in all of the studied indoor ice rinks. The field measurement results were utilized to develop a general framework for a technical monitoring method for indoor ice rinks. The monitoring method provides an overview of what needs to be measured, and how the measurement results need to the analysed, interpreted and reported in order to accurately monitor the indoor conditions, operation of technical systems and general energy efficiency of indoor ice rinks.
