Abstract

In this thesis, box-window is a window which has a glazed, approximately 500 mm thick, box-shaped and ventilated double facade structure as an outer skin. The study was launched from the need to verify whether box-windows of project Tripla are heat- and moisture-technically suitable for Finland’s weather conditions. In the background, there was a suspicion that solar radiation may cause overheating problems with the box window. This was estimated to have a detrimental effect on the interior of the building, especially in the thermal comfort and cooling energy consumption. In addition, box-window’s waterproofing, rain water control and condensation on glass surfaces were seen as risks. The aim of the thesis was to study if these risks will be realized, and if they do, how they can be solved. The thesis consists of a literature review, field studies and energy simulations conducted with dynamic energy and indoor climate simulation software. In the field studies, heat and moisture effects of bow-window prototypes were measured in various weather conditions. In addition, moisture technical operation of the prototype box-windows was visually observed. The measurement results were compared to simulations carried out with the dynamic energy and indoor climate simulation software. Furthermore, energy simulations were conducted in order to find the theoretically most energy-efficient solution for box-window. Architectural demands were kept as an initial for the box-window detail solutions. Based on field studies, the box-window was found to be suitable for Finnish weather conditions from heat-technical point of view. Excessively large temperature differences were not measured. Comparison of measurements and simulations showed that the box-window’s thermal functionality and energy efficiency can be sufficiently accurately simulated with numerical computation. Optimal energy efficiency was achieved by using a 50 mm wide ventilation air gap circulating the box window profile, combined with low U-value glazing and venetian blinds installed in the outermost air cavity of the box-window. Additional benefit of the ventilation in reducing heat gain was significantly lower than positioning venetian blinds in the air cavity or lowering the overall g-value. Waterproofing solutions and rain water control systems of the box-windows require further development, but this was expected in the prototypes. Box-window’s air gaps gather dirt inside the box-cavity, which may increase the need for cleaning. Fogging of bow-windows was also studied theoretically and in the field studies. Water vapour will occasionally condensate on the outermost glazing of the box-window because of good thermal insulation of the inner window. Condensation can be prevented by installing a hard low-e coating on the outermost surface of the outer skin.
