Abstract
Computer codes are used widely in nuclear safety research. Thermal-hydraulic codes are able to model large systems up to full scale nuclear power plants. Apros is multifunctional software for modelling and dynamic simulation, developed by VTT in collaboration with Fortum. Apros is widely used for safety analysis of nuclear power plants. In this thesis the history and evolution of boiling water reactors (BWR) towards the Advanced Boiling water Reactor (ABWR) is presented. The main focus is targeted on the EU-ABWR designed by Toshiba. The purpose of this work was to study the passive safety systems for boiling water reactors and to make the full scale EU-ABWR model with Apros. In this study a complete model for EU-ABWR Nuclear Power Plant with the Passive Containment Cooling System (PCCS) has been modelled with Apros. After the Fukushima accident the interest towards the passive safety systems has increased significantly among the nuclear community. The safety systems in EU-ABWR are presented in this thesis. Passive safety systems are into special notice. Also the effects of the Fukushima accident are discussed shortly. The Apros model of the EU-ABWR Nuclear Power Plant has been made from scratch using only public material. The model is quite complete in every essential parts of the power plant, although it is not very detailed in many parts. The functionality of the Apros model was verified by calculating two transients. The Containment model and the PCCS were tested in the first case where a severe meltdown accident was simulated. The PCCS system worked as planned with natural circulation and it was capable for transferring the residual heat to the PCCS pool and further to the atmosphere acting as the Ultimate Heat Sink. The operation of the whole nuclear power plant model was tested in the second case, where station blackout transient was simulated. In this case the decay heat was removed to the atmosphere with Isolation Condensers (IC). Blowdown to the wetwell through the relief valves by overpressure occurred only once, which fulfils the Finnish YVL Requirement. The results were quite similar compared to the MAAP simulations made by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and tests from the thermal hydraulic test facility TIGER by Toshiba. These calculations verify that the full model of the EU-ABWR power plant with PCCS is functional. However the modelling is not comprehensive and further validation is needed if more accurate safety analysis is considered to be made with the model.

Monia erilaisia laskentaohjelmistoja on kehitetty ydinvoimalaitosten turvallisuustutkimusta varten. Termohydraulisilla ohjelmistoilla pystytään mallintamaan kokonaisen ydinvoimalaitoksen toimintaa. Apros on VTT:n ja Fortumin yhdessä omistama ja kehittämä laskentaohjelmisto, jota käytetään laajalti ydinvoimalaitosten turvallisuusanalyyseihin. Tässä diplomityössä on esitetty kiehutusvesireaktoreiden kehitys kohti ABWR-reaktoria (Advanced Boiling water Reactor, kehittynyt kiehutusvesireaktori). Pääpaino on Toshiban suunnittelemassa EU-ABWR -laitoksessa. EU-ABWR -laitoksen Apros-malli on tehty alusta alkaen käyttäen lähteenä ainoastaan julkista materiaalia. Malli on melko kattava tärkeimmiltä osiltaan, vaikkakaan kovin yksityiskohtaista mallinnusta ei ole kaikin osin tehty, johtuen julkisesti saatavien lähtötietojen puutteista. Mallin toimivuus on testattu simuloimalla kaksi koetapausta.
