Abstract
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is considered as the most significant greenhouse gas (GHG). This makes the CO2 capture an important industrial process. The most studied and mature CO2 capture process available is absorbing the CO2 with amine solutions and their mixtures. However, the regeneration of these amine solvents is very energy intensive. Phase change solvents are very promising new technology in CO2 capture as they form two liquid phases when mixed with CO2. The formed phases are CO2-lean and CO2-rich phase and only the CO2-rich phase is regenerated resulting in significant energy savings. A phase change solvent system of 2-(diethylamine)ethanol (DEEA) and 3-(methylamino)propylamine (MAPA) was chosen as the studied system. In process industry, simulations are conducted to assess feasibility of different alternatives. In simulating electrolyte systems different activity and fugacity coefficient models are used. In the literature part several of such models are presented. The extended-UNIQUAC activity coefficient model was used in this study because the parameters needed were available for DEEA+MAPA system. The model implemented into in-house simulator, Flowbat, was first tested. Then the model was used to simulate different systems. In several references it has been stated that the 5M DEEA + 2M MAPA solution, further 5D2M, lowers the energy consumption in the regenerator significantly when compared to industrially conventional ethanolamine (MEA) solution. The amount of water in the regenerated solution raises the reboiler energy consumption as water has high specific heat capacity. When the behavior of 5D2M solution was studied with different CO2 loadings it was found that as the CO2 amount rises the amount of water in the solution to be regenerated was lower. Also increasing the amount of DEEA and MAPA decreases the water amount. When the energy consumption between the 5D2M and the MEA solutions was compared is was found that with 5D2M the energy consumption is significantly lower and also the amine regeneration is more efficient. However, it was found that the more CO2 is removed from the amine solution the higher the energy consumption is. In the future studies the most profitable ratio between the amount of removed CO2 and the energy consumption needs to be investigated. In addition, the viscosity and density modeling for mixed amine systems need to be developed. For better usability, the extended-UNIQUAC model should be implemented into Aspen Plus simulator.

Hiilidioksidi (CO2) on merkittävin ilmastonmuutosta aiheuttavista kasvihuonekaasuista. Tästä syystä hiilidioksidin talteenotto on tärkeä teollinen prosessi. Näiden amiiniliuosten regenerointi on erittäin energiaintensiivinen prosessi. Laajennettu UNIQUAC aktiivisuuskerroinmalli valittiin mallinnusta varten, sillä tarvittavat parametrit DEEA + MAPA seokselle olivat saatavilla.
