Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to look into the role of design in startups and to shed some light on the reasons so many startups fail and so few succeed. The startup phenomenon is rapidly spreading globally from industry to industry. Innovative solutions are invented to challenge the existing companies, business models and ways of building and scaling companies. In Finland the startup scene is active and growing, thanks to Startup Sauna, Aalto Ventures programme and Slush - the largest startup conference in the Nordic countries. As the phenomenon spreads more and more startups are popping up while at the same time 75% of the startups tend to fail. According to Shikhar Ghosh from Harvard Business School (interviewed by Carmen Nobel 2011) the amount that fail is three out of four of venture backed startups. This means that an enormous amount of resources are wasted and that makes the topic a perfect design challenge to dive into. In my own experience startups are using design for shaping the brand, products or services - typically on the surface. This thesis will dig deeper into understanding startup culture and methods in order to find suitable design methods and tools for shaping a startup from the inside out. Could design help to shape the core of a startup in a way that would help more startups at least to survive and hopefully to thrive in the global competition? First the thesis will focus on finding typical and non-typical reasons for startup failures by crystallising the reasons from web resources, literature and reports. This is followed by a literature review that focuses on startup and design literature. The empirical part of the thesis consists of a series of indepth interviews and focuses on investigating the Finnish startup community and its experiences in building new ventures utilising design and designers. Literature indicates that the main reasons for failing startups have been lack of foresight, lack of wiggle room in the business plan, bad timing or insufficient funding. Some attributes are controversial in the sense that if a startup gets too much funding for an unstable business model it can turn the whole venture into failure. To succeed startups need to consider timing, have a good team and execution with a brilliant business idea and business model and suitable funding. Nobel (2011, p.1) Ries (2011, p.3) Gross, B. (2015) The empirical part of this thesis is a multiple case study conducted with four Finnish startups to identify how the case startups utilise design in the development process of the startup. The case study sought answers to the following questions: The role of design in the case startups? How deeply design is utilised in the case startups? How much does a designer take part in working with non-design related issues? What competences and capabilities are needed in order to work as a designer in a startup? The thesis has four main finding. The first finding is that the role of design is bigger when it is involved in the day-to-day decision making. The second finding is that a designer’s competence plays a major role in establishing the role of design within a startup. It seems that the more a designer has responsibility at a startup’s core, the more competence is required from him or her. The third finding is that startup development is a team sport. It seems that design methods broaden the perspective of the typically small startup teams by bringing creative thinking and design tools on board. The fourth finding is that building a startup is continuous development - and that the process is not linear, it is more like a spiral. A spiral process means that startups build something to begin with and keep on improving it as an ongoing routine. The key discovery of the literature review as well the case study is that the design process and tools suit startup culture very well. Such tools or methods are creativity, empathy, prototyping and design thinking. This thesis argues that designers can bring advantages to the entire development process of a startup and endeavours to confirm those assumptions. The dominant assumption is that design could be a strategic differentiator and an innovation driver in startups in the future. The thesis aims at analysing the design perspective to find suitable methods and tools for startups to use in order to gain best possible advantage with their limited resources.

Tämän maisterin lopputyön tarkoituksena on tutkia muotoilun roolia startup-yrityksissä ja etsiä syitä sille, miksi moni startup-yritys epäonnistuu ja vain harva menestyy kansainvälisesti. Maailmanlaajuinen startup-ilmiö on levinnyt nopeasti alalta toiselle. Tapaustutkimus etsii vastauksia seuraaviin kysymyksiin: Mikä on muotoilun rooli startup-yrityksissä? Kuinka syvällisesti muotoilua hyödynnetään startup-yrityksissä? Kuinka paljon muotoilijalla on vastuuta yritysten muilla osa-alueilla?
