Abstract
The Portevin--Le Chatelier effect is a complex form of macroscopic plastic instability. It manifests itself as serrations in the stress-strain curve and as strain localizations in the form of inclined deformation bands. After many years of study with different experimental techniques the advances in measurement technology have finally made higher acquisition frequencies possible and therefore smaller timescales can be investigated. In particular the laser speckle pattern technique with a high speed camera capable of acquisition frequencies up to 90 kHz is used here in conjunction with a normal camera used for the digital image correlation method. These smaller timescale phenomena include the possible fluctuations and discontinuities of the continuous mode of propagation and the nucleation events of the deformation bands, especially in the case of discontinuous mode of propagation. Also the crossover from the continuous to discontinuous propagation is of interest in terms of the detailed nature of the propagation. The results presented here show clear fluctuations in the continuous propagation velocity but no apparent discontinuities. The discontinuously propagating bands show multiple different types of nucleation and multiple different propagation velocities related to the apparent propagation through discontinuous hopping, to the small distance propagation of the actual bands and to the propagation of a nucleating band in the direction of the band. The crossover between the continuous and discontinuous propagation is seen directly and some correlations between the velocity fluctuations and fluctuations in the stress rate are seen.

Portevinin-Le Chatelierin ilmiö on monimutkainen makroskooppinen epävakausilmiö plastisessa muodonmuutoksessa.
