Abstract
The cabin areas of a cruise ship determine a large portion of the revenue potential the vessel, while being responsible for a significant proportion of the construction and maintenance costs. The development of cabin areas is challenging because they integrate into the ship’s structures and systems in a complex manner. During the history of purpose-built cruise ships only small evolutionary advancements have been made to the cabin area design. Because of the changes the operating environment, the limits of current technology are approaching, consequently cruise ships cabin areas are in need of a thorough reconsideration. Systems engineering is a process developed for developing complex products, widely used for example in automotive and aerospace industries, which aims to approach complex system in a holistic manner. In this thesis the methods of systems engineering are applied to the design of cabin areas. The final product of the design process is a flexible cruise ship hotel space concept consisting of macroscopic interchangeable modules, which potentially makes it possible to refit and reconfigure cabin areas as a continuous process while the vessel is in normal operation.

Järjestelmäsuunnittelu (engl. systems engineering) on prosessi, jolla pyritään hallitsemaan monimutkaisia kokonaisuuksia koko niiden elinkaaren ajan. Tässä diplomityössä järjestelmäsuunnittelun alalla kehitettyjä tekniikoita sovelletaan risteilyaluksen hyttialueen suunnitteluun. Työn lopputuloksena on risteilyaluksen suurtilamoduulijärjestelmä, joka mahdollistaa hyttialueiden uudistamisen ja uudelleenjärjestelyn jatkuvana prosessina ilman ylimääräistä telakointia tai muita normaalista poikkeavia keskeytyksiä aluksen käytössä.
