Abstract
Kallion ala-asteen koulu on n. 380 oppilaan peruskoulun luokka-asteet 1-6 käsittävä oppilaitos. Nykytila on inventoitu paikanpäällä.

Kallio primary school comprises classes 1 to 6 with 380 pupils in total. The school was built in 1910 in the Kallio neighbourhood of Helsinki as the result of an architecture competition. It was designed by Bertel Jung and Oscar Bomanson as an example of late jugend or art nouveau style. When finished, the school was the biggest of its kind with 30 classrooms, 5 floors, and 2400 pupils. The history report for the school building serves as a starting point and gives background information for the upcoming renovation of the building. The research on general history is based on literature, and the developments of the school building have been investigated through archived material, such as construction drawings and old photographs. The existing situation has been recorded on-site. Additionally, users of the building have been interviewed, and the suitability of the spaces has been evaluated by comparing them to the modern design ideals of schools. Originally the school was built to satisfy the needs of a growing number of pupils especially in Finnish-speaking and densely populated working-class quarters. The area in question got its city plan in 1901, although it had already been divided up as working-class housing quarters a early as 1887. The new school stood out in the cityscape amongst the surrounding low buildings, but today the neighbouring blocks have grown level with it. The original room program with its spacious corridors flanked by classrooms was dictated by the school board. The building remained much in its original state until in 1969 it was renovated according to the plans of the Public Works Department. The renovation implemented large alterations, e.g. replacing all windows and doors and demolishing and building walls. The current state of the school is largely as it was after the renovation, but the original sharp space hierarchy and proportions can still be seen. Restoring the street facades to their original style would bring back the distinctive character of the building and enhance the cityscape. Inside, the corridors and stairwells are the best preserved and historically most valuable spaces. By giving back the corridors their pre-renovation state of natural lighting they would become more comfortable and their use could be more versatile. The room program almost matches that of a modern school, but the spaces in Kallio primary school do not open and connect smoothly as connections between spaces are through corridors. The users of the building are content and the spaces cater well to their use. Pedagogic reforms are possible to see through in the existing building. The need for spatial renovations mostly concern the sanitary and work rooms. The most acute need for updating concern the building technology and the school yard. The most part of the plot is used as a parking space and is covered with asphalt. Designing a new building by the street and opening the block to the use of local residents would improve the unclear and vague city space that is now the school yard and its neighbouring park.
