Abstract
Opinnäytetyöni on Block -valokuvakirja, jonka Kehrer Verlag julkaisee elokuussa 2015. Kirja luo ensisilmäyksellä dystooppisen kaupunkinäyn, jossa raha haisee, ihmiset etsivät onnea, toisiaan ja tarkoitusta elämälleen. Kuva liikkuu dokumentaarisen kuvan eri traditioiden rajapinnoilla, ja on tarkkaan kontrolloitu ja tulkittu näkemys tämänhetkisestä yhteiskunnasta ja kaupunkiympäristöstä. Samalla kirja on omakuvallinen dokumentti taiteilijan kokemuksesta suurkaupungin asukkaana. Kirjan kuvat on kuvattu New Yorkissa vuosien 2014 ja 2015 aikana. Opinnäytetyöni kirjallisessa osassa käyn läpi kirjaprojektini työskentelyprosessia.My Master’s thesis Block consists of a photobook Block, published by Kehrer Verlag on August 2015. The book is a photographic essay, amassed as a set of visions, offering hints for storylines in a murky, dystopic scene of the city witnessed by a stranger. Focusing on gray, concrete features with some people as spectators, narrowing down the elements in the frame, driven most often by the observation of the shapes the light creates, it alludes to a mute perspective toward contemporary city life and the people’s role in it. Simultaneously it is a story where the photographer plays the role of a protagonist in the big city that throws a newcomer into its infinite whirl of new people and peculiar surroundings. Photographs for the book were shot in New York between 2014 and 2015. In this written thesis I recount my working process leading up to the final, visual ensemble.Description
