Abstract
Software integration is an assembly task where individual components have to be laid carefully for seamless interoperation. One ill-advised change in either the integrations, or inside the systems themselves, might cause a harmful discontinuity in routine operations. This master's thesis examines testing these cross-component and cross-system connections within a Finnish complete lifecyc1e power solutions supplier and sets out to define a practical method of operation for conducting automated integration testing. The thesis expounded on integration testing theory and frameworks. Testing frameworks in academic literature were deconstructed and analysed, and their characteristic features observed. These practical insights were combined with theoretical findings and crystallized into a new integration testing framework, which was then tailored for the case company needs. The resulting framework was comprehensively evaluated through requirements analysis, heuristic appraisal, and qualitative validation by company experts. The constructed framework both describes a testing process work flow and suggests a technical implementation. In practice, the implementation brings a sense of organization to a previously ad hoc process thereby mitigating business risk. In theory, it extends the popular notion that integration testing is a mere transitional period in development and examines testing as a continuous process all the way from the strategic level to the mundane. The thesis constitutes a cohesive narrative and guide to implementing automated integration testing.
