Abstract
Tämän opinnäytteen kirjoitusmetodi on bricolage, vahvasti improvisaation värittämä intuitiivinen tapa etsiä yllättäviä yhteyksiä erilaisten tekstilähteiden väliltä. K – kollaasi, kirjasto, kohina, kyborgi pyrkii yhdistämään kirjallisen sisältönsä ja ulkoasunsa kollaasiksi, yhtenäiseksi kokonaisuudeksi, jota ei voida rikkoa merkityksiä muuttamatta. Inspiraatio tähän kokeelliseen ja improvisaatioon nojaavaan lähestymistapaan on kummunnut sellaisten merkittävien kirjoittaja/taiteilija -parien uraauurtavista teoksista kuin William S. Burroughs & Brion Gysin, Guy Debord & Asger Jorn sekä Marshall McLuhan & Quentin Fiore. Kollaasi voidaan nähdä tapana elää, luoda ja ymmärtää nykyhetkessä.

In this day and age, life in developed societies revolves increasingly around information. World-encompassing networks of information storage and retrieval form the foundations upon which the realms of culture and commerce are built. We have recently crossed the threshold between the old and the new, the times pre- and post-internet. Has the speed of the development and proliferation of media technologies exceeded the speed of research? What is the state of our understanding of the far-reaching effects of new media technologies? The main focus of this thesis are the thoughts of ’60s media theorist Marshall McLuhan and his notion that media environments are invisible to the people who inhabit them. McLuhan – along with many other media theorists such as Jukka Sihvonen and Jussi Parikka – sees artistic practices, experimental research and works of fiction capable of revealing the nature of our technological environments through their shock effects, offering valuable insight and new perspectives. As information mounts at an ever increasing rate and new technologies of communication have eradicated the limitations of space and time, diverse practices of copying, cutting, selecting and remixing have quickly become fundamental aspects of both living in and making sense of the digital present. All of these practices fall under the umbrella of collage, the key word through which this thesis explores the nature of the audiovisual and textual cornucopia of our times. Since the subject of this thesis is the fragmented nature of our everyday audiovisual experience, the text mirrors this fragmentation in its methods. This fragmentation is evident on the levels of both content and form – C is for Collage relies on experimental and unorthodox typographical approaches as means to reveal the nature of text as a linear medium, and to reveal the book as a highly specialized technology of information storage that is very different from the non-linear online reading experience. The method of writing employed is bricolage, an improvisational textual collage of intuitive and often surprising connections. An attempt has been made to fuse the textual content of this thesis with its visual representation, creating a unified whole – once again, a collage – that cannot be taken apart without losing a part of the meaning in the process. The inspiration for this experimental and highly improvisational approach springs from the groundbreaking collaborative work of such writer/artist pairs as William S. Burroughs & Brion Gysin, Guy Debord & Asger Jorn, and Marshall McLuhan & Quentin Fiore. Collage can be seen as a way of living in, creating and understanding the present.
