Abstract
Tutkimusmenetelmänä on käytetty hermeneuttis-fenomenologista lähestymistapaa, jonka avulla erilaiset aineistot kietoutuvat yhteen valottamaan kokonaisuutta.

This Master of Arts thesis in Art Education investigates the relation between garden pedagogy, school gardens and art education from different perspectives. The intention of the thesis is to show the similarities of garden and art pedagogy through the perspectives of educational philosophy, history and practice. To tie in the different materials and enlighten the complete thesis, a hermeneutic phenomenological research method has been used as the manner of approach. With the help of the field’s literature, this thesis gives an overview of the fundation of the educational philosophy of garden based learning and how that inspired the School Garden ideology that influenced in Finland in the beginning of the 20th-century. Main sources of the historical perspective are guidebooks for teachers that generated from the School Garden ideology. The history of school gardens is compared to the school garden practice in the 21st -century using a school garden plan of a certain school garden as the main source. In addition to that plan, the thesis writer’s own experiences as a camp leader in school garden’s summer camps enlighten the 21st-century school garden activity. As well as this experience, drawed and written data of the thesis writer’s own balcony garden’s maintenance is used. This helped to emphasize the situation of learning in a garden and at the same time deepen the art educational way of thinking in a garden environment. This knowledge brings an experienced perspective to the understanding of garden pedagogy. The material related to garden pedagogy as well as the materials originated from the balcony garden have been themed together according to the similarities in their content. Experiential and hands-on learning, committed teaching, perception, and especially seeing garden as a way to deal with different phenomena the same way art does bind garden and art pedagogy together. From this point of view, learning in garden could benefit art education.
