Abstract
In this thesis electricity generation is considered from two different starting points: modelling of electricity generation on an hourly basis and efficient biomass use in the electricity sector. In the first part power plant dispatch is modelled according to the merit order of variable costs of different electricity generation technologies, using the examples of the UK and Spain. Results of the model are compared to historical electricity generation data and historical spot market prices. Modelling of the power plant dispatch shows that existing intermittent power generation already has impacts on power production and electricity prices. It is harder to forecast the full-load hours and power plant dispatch of conventional generation units when more intermittent renewables are introduced to the power system. The second part consists of differentiated scenarios for biomass energy use in Europe. Scenarios are built according to the national renewable energy action plans submitted by each European member state under the 2009 EC Renewables directives. Purpose of the scenario analysis is to estimate demand for primary biomass resources in Europe in 2020 and the role of biomass CHP in reducing primary biomass resource use. The results of these scenarios demonstrate the intended growth of biomass CHP and its benefits in efficient resource use. Furthermore, the potential for a greater expansion of biomass CHP is investigated. The results of this thesis show that improving the efficiency of bioenergy production would improve the sustainability and profitability of fulfilling the ambitious targets of EU member states. Biomass CHP could make a significant contribution towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and indeed the EU Emissions trading system does increase the profitability of biomass compared to fossil fuels. Unfortunately, thus far the EU ETS has not provided sufficiently strong carbon price signal to promote new low carbon plant investments. Furthermore, many national support instruments for renewables have focused upon promoting wind and solar power, neglecting the fact that unlike these intermittent forms of generation, biomass CHP can provide much-needed base-load.

Toinen osio koostuu erilaisista biomassan hyödyntämisskenaarioista Euroopassa. Skenaariot pohjautuvat Euroopan Unionin jäsenvaltioiden toimittamiin uusiutuvan energian kansallisiin toimintasuunnitelmiin.
