Abstract

Nowadays the alternative energy sources in vehicles are becoming more general. An internal combustion engine is no more the only way to propel vehicles. There are different kinds of hybrid electric and fully electric powertrains suitable for automotive applications. The electrical components require a robust temperature control with a liquid cooling system. Thermal management design of these powertrain solutions can be challenging. This diploma thesis studies electric powertrain thermal management by modelling and simulation. The thesis covers the physics of heat exchange, heat generation and cooling demand of the powertrain components. The model of an electric powered city bus was developed by using LMS Image.Lab AMESim software. The developed model can simulate longitudinal dynamics, energy consumption, electric system operation and thermal management of the vehicle. The thesis topic is strongly related to an electric bus research project. Simulations, with the electric bus model, were conducted in different conditions in order to evaluate the heat generation and temperature control of the powertrain components. Four different city bus driving cycles, five different ambient temperatures, two different vehicle masses, and three different battery cooling systems were used as variables in simulations. The used driving cycles were Braunschweig, Manhattan, Espoo 11 and 550 (Jokeri). Based on the simulation results, thermal losses and the heat exchange of the electric powertrain components were evaluated with sufficient accuracy. Simulation results showed that the thermal losses of different powertrain components are generated in different phases of the operation, and are dependent on the driving cycle. Also, the ambient temperatures effects on the efficiency of powertrain component heat exchange. This thesis illustrates that the thermal management simulations support the development of hybrid and electric powertrains.
