Abstract

The purpose of this thesis was to present a case of product development that utilized user-centered methods as a basis for decision making. The project aimed at designing a valid product concept for a sensor set for long-term brain wave (EEG) monitoring on critically ill patients being treated in intensive care units (ICUs). The current practices of EEG monitoring in the ICUs have been found laborious and problematic by the primary users, the nurses. The focus of the thesis was fixed on designing a product concept that would meet the user needs of the nurses. The patients being monitored were considered as passive users of the equipment as their health condition typically prevents them from active participation. As they are not able to communicate their experiences regarding the use of the equipment, special care must be taken to ensure that the equipment does not compromise their safety or well-being. The concept creation was founded on a ground of a theoretical frame, benchmarking of commercially available EEG headwear products and a contextual interview study conducted on potential users. With these means, the goal was to understand the needs of the users and the requirements created by the context of use. The design solutions were explored through prototyping. The process was iterative, utilizing users as informants and evaluators of ideas in several phases. The methods of focus group, autoethnography, interview, observation, and creating personas and scenarios, were employed. Furthermore, the patient view was studied through prototype testing performed by volunteers, headset fitting tests and skin pressure tests. The different research approaches gave direction to the design process and indication to further development possibilities. The objective of the work was to develop a valid product concept and to demonstrate how user-centered methods could benefit the design process. Both goals were met, and the results of the work are considered valuable. The headset project is still in its early stages and requires further research and development. The potential of the concept, however, looks promising and clinical testing on actual patients is scheduled to start during spring 2012.
