The purpose of this bachelor's thesis was to test different grooving methods for permanent magnets. Through the tests, the purpose was also to find a suitable grooving method for permanent magnets, which are magnetic. The effect of grooving methods on the magnetism of permanent magnets was also investigated. In addition, the production costs for water jet cutting as a grooving method have been calculated. The literature review deals with the theoretical part of the properties of permanent magnets, materials, use in a permanent magnet synchronous motor, grooving methods, eddy current losses and their reduction in permanent magnets.
The higher the operating frequency at which the permanent magnet synchronous motor operates, the higher the eddy current losses in the motor. Because of this, eddy current losses also occur in permanent magnets, causing them to heat up. Eddy current losses can be reduced in various ways, for example by cutting the permanent magnet into parts and gluing together or grooving the permanent magnets. The requirements for the grooving methods were low heat input to the material of the permanent magnet, grooving speed, small groove width, and low mechanical stress on the permanent magnet during grooving.
The measurement of the magnetism of permanent magnets and the implementation of grooving are described in detail in the bachelor's thesis using water jet cutting, laser engraving, EDM (Electro Discharge Machining) and wire-EDM as grooving methods. In addition, the cost of production, the percentage change in volume and magnetism compared to the theoretical volume and magnetism of a standard permanent magnet are shown in the tables.
