Tiivistelmä
Long-term and well-functioning business relationships have become even more important as international competition is fierce in many different sectors. The aim of relationship marketing is to maintain the relationship by taking care of e.g., customer satisfaction and to develop the relationship to make it even more profitable. However, to be able to conduct successful relationship marketing it is important to know which factors affect the partners’ perceptions about relationship quality. The purpose of this master's thesis is to find out those factors affecting the quality of the business relationship between a manufacturer (supplier) and its foreign distributors. As the study is conducted in international context, it also explores the impact of different cultural backgrounds for the relationship quality. The research is made in collaboration with a Finnish-based, strongly internationalized industrial manufacturing company whose distribution network currently reaches more than hundred different countries.
The theory part of the thesis covers concepts of relationship marketing and its various school of thoughts. Based on the literature review, it can be stated that there are several different views on the factors influencing the quality of the relationship, but the central theory is based on Morgan and Hunt's theory of trust and commitment. The impact of culture on relationship marketing and the quality of the business relationship is addressed mainly through Hofstede’s cultural dimension theory. The research is a qualitative study, and the data was collected from six interviews: three representatives from the manufacturer company and three representatives from the distributor companies. The interviewees represent several different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. The received interview data was analyzed by using a content analysis technique.
Empirical research reveals that the most important factor influencing the quality of a relationship is trust. Trust is a prerequisite for the continuation of the whole relationship, as mutual trust enables business planning and growth. Other factors that affect the quality of the relationship are commitment, financial benefits, customer service and communication, and shared values. In addition, social relationships are seen to have an impact on relationship quality. Based on the results, it can be concluded that culture does not have a particular effect on the quality of the business relationship, as both distributors and the manufacturer's representatives view themselves as international operators, and thus, cultural differences have little effect on business relationship. However, it is beneficial to be aware of cultural differences, as the understanding of the other party's culture may help resolving problem situations as well developing and deepening of the entire business relationship. Jotta suhdemarkkinointia on mahdollista toteuttaa, on kuitenkin tärkeää tietää mitkä asiat vaikuttavat toimijoiden käsitykseen suhteen laadusta. Tämän pro gradu tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, mitkä asiat vaikuttavat valmistajan ja jakelijan välisen yrityssuhteen laatuun. Lisäksi tutkitaan, millainen vaikutus erilaisella kulttuurilla on yrityssuhteen laadun näkökulmasta.
