Tiivistelmä
This master’s thesis studies the different electricity procurement possibilities provided by the wholesale electricity markets. The thesis studies whether it is profitable for a company to change their current electricity procurement that focuses on other companies’ services and long-term price safeguarding through financial markets. The optional markets are the wholesale markets including day-ahead and intraday with the secondary markets included.
The study is conducted with one-year market history data provided by Fingrid and Nordpool that is then compared to the expenses a company had with their electricity procurement. Once the initial results of profitability are shown, this thesis provides a study on how to improve profitability under different market scenarios.
The study shows that 100% wholesale market participation would have been unprofitable for the company in the spot price ascension scenario of the thesis in 2019 but indicates how with partial market participation to the wholesale side of the electricity procurement, the company can find secondary income streams from consumption timing and the reserve- and balancing markets. With these streams in place, the profitability could have been improved for the whole year. The thesis further proposes a good medium that does not erase price safeguards from the financial markets but rather reduces it in order to have some wholesale market participation in order to profit from both.
The results of the study are then further reflected in other electricity markets in China, Europe, USA, India and Brazil where some markets provide ample opportunities but with high risks, while others provide potential but with smaller risks maybe worth taking.
Tutkimus suoritetaan sähkömarkkinoiden historiadatalla yhden vuoden osalta.
