Radiation protection is an essential part of the operations of a nuclear power plant, and at best it is a collaboration with all the departments within the plant. In a nuclear power plant, radiation protection aims to optimise the accumulation of dose and to protect individuals from unnecessarily large doses.
In this master's thesis is reviewed the sufficiency of radiation protection education given by the power plant, the procedures of work- and technical planning and how well they take ALARA-principle into account, the most significant actions to optimise radiation exposure in the power plants history, accumulated doses in the power plants history, how much dose has been approximately avoided by the optimisation actions, and the realisation of ALARA-principle in the power plants operations. A rudimentary value is determined for the price of radiation dose , called α-value. This value can be utilised to evaluate the cost efficieny of future procurements which aim to minimize the accumulating dose in the power plant.
ALARA-principle can be seen to actualise quite well in the power plants operations. The most efficient way to minimize exposure is to minimize the source term. Continuous efforts to minimize the source term take place by carefully optimising the plants water chemistry, and by limiting the amount of materials in the primary circuit that could cause exposure. Considerable amount of actions has taken place in the plants history to reduce exposure, including plant modifications and upgrading the used work methods. ALARA-principle is taken into account in different phases of work- and technical planning. The radiation protection education meets the national guidance, but in international comparison is quite brief. Advanced and familiarising education is offered when a need for it is noticed, but the, but the given training is not particularly specialized for the work groups.
