Tiivistelmä
Much research has been made about business risks and risk management. Research about business risks and risk management has been proven popular among academics. Research related to risk management and business risks have been conducted in several disciplines, but it is unexplored in EPC projects on the U.S. market. Risk management processes, risk management tools and supply chain risk management are topics that have been extensively researched. Conclusions can be made, that risks in EPC projects on the U.S. market has not been researched earlier and therefore this research provides a new dimension to the risk management and business risk field.
The overall objective with this Master’s thesis is to examine, what are the critical risks in EPC projects for the case company on the U.S. market. The case company that has requested this research is a company operating globally in the energy industry. The reason for only considering the U.S. market and the EPC project type is out of request from the case company and a strategic narrowing of the thesis.
The theoretical framework summarizes existing literature on business risks, risk management and construction projects. The theoretical framework fulfills also the theoretical sub objective of this Master’s thesis. A qualitative research method was chosen for the empirical research. The primary data was collected from five semi-structured interviews with employees from the case company. The interviews were conducted by support from an interview guide. Further data was collected from the case company’s homepage, with the aim of providing a perspective on the primary data.
The results from the empirical research indicates that risk categories as, compliance risks, financial risks, country risks and operational risks are the most critical risk categories for the case company to consider in its EPC projects on the U.S. market. The compliance risks were mentioned most frequently during the semi-structured interviews, but the other risks have significant impact too and should for this reason also be considered.
This Master’s thesis has created an overall understanding for the case company about, what are the most critical risks in the case company’s EPC projects on the U.S. market. The overall understanding can be said to originate from the theoretical framework and the empirical research. The overall objective of this research has been met.
