Tiivistelmä
This cross-sectional study examined the associations between working memory (WM) performance and video gaming in a large sample of 503 adult participants. The participants completed ten separate WM tests and filled out a background questionnaire that included questions on their video gaming habits. WM was assessed with three composite measures (verbal WM, visuospatial WM, n-back) that were based on the latent structure of the WM test battery. Video gaming experience was measured with self-reported weekly gaming hours and the game categories played. Hierarchical multiple linear regressions were used to test how WM performance was associated with video gaming. The results revealed that a higher amount of video gaming hours was associated with better visuospatial WM and n-back performance, but not with verbal WM performance. As regards game categories, time spent on action video games showed a statistically significant positive association with visuospatial WM performance. Positive associations between non-action video gaming and visuospatial WM performance as well as n-back performance were also observed. In conclusion, the present results are in line with previous studies reporting positive associations between self-reported video gaming experience and specific aspects of WM performance, albeit the associations in the current study were weak. The possible underlying mechanisms of these associations are discussed.
