Tehoelektroniikan kehitys on tuonut mahdollisuuksia käyttää vaihtosähkön sijaan tasasähköä sähkön jakelussa.
In the 20th century, as electricity became more common, electricity was also wanted for households outside of cities. The problem was the short shift of the direct current but the idea of an alternating current brought this solution. Alternating current started to displace direct currents place in the electricity supply and from that point on the consumption of electricity has only increased. Continues growth of electricity consumption has given need to improve our electricity distribution systems. We have reached the maximum lenght of electricity distribution that is cost-effective with alternating current.
The development of power electronics has brought opportunities to use direct current instead of alternating current in our electricity distribution. Development of power electronics, growth of production and increasing use of power electronics have made LVDC and HVDC systems possible options. The development of power electronics has also build up the capasity of energy storages. Decentralized electricity production and small-scale production have become more common and smart grid is going to be part of our everyday life.
The competitiveness of direct current doesn’t mean instant changes in our electricity distribution systems. Direct current has been studied to make our future electricity distribution better and to improve the quality of electricity that is delivered to customers. Changes may take some time but based on the results and studies gained, direct current has a bright future in electricity distribution.
