Sijoituspotentiaalia tutkitaan tarkastelemalla takaisinostettujen osakkeiden arvonkehitystä kolmen vuoden ajan kolmen kuukauden periodeissa. Tämän lisäksi osakkeiden arvonkehitystä verrataan vertailuindeksiin, jona tässä tapauksessa toimii OMX Helsinki CAP -indeksi. Empiirinen tutkimus on toteutettu kvantitatiivisin menetelmin, joissa pääasiallisesti vertaillaan osakkeiden ja indeksin niitä vastaavan ajanjakson logaritmisia tuottoja. Aineistossa käytetään Suomessa vuosien 2012 ja 2013 aikana tapahtuneita takaisinhankintoja. Tarvittava tieto niistä on kerätty yritysten pörssijulkaisuista. Osakkeiden ja indeksin arvonkehityksen arvioinnissa käytetty aikasarjadata on Datastreamista.
Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, että tarkasteltujen vuosien aikana tehdyt takaisinostot ovat noin puoleentoista vuoteen asti keskimäärin selvästi parempia sijoituksia kuin esimerkiksi vertailuindeksi. Tämän jälkeen erot indeksin ja osakkeiden välillä tasaantuvat ja keskimäärin indeksi jopa ohittaa osakkeet arvon kasvussa The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to explore corporate share repurchases, the methods used to accomplish them and the motivating factors behind the decision to repurchase. Special focus is given to examining the possibility of investment opportunities with repurchases and finding out if corporations carry out share repurchases in a way that they could be considered good investments. The assumption of investment opportunities is based on claims made in previous studies on signalling hypothesis, such as undervaluation of stock and the will by the repurchasing firm to signal this to the market.
The investment potential is examined by looking into value growth of repurchased stock for a duration of three years after the initial purchase. The value growth is also compared to the value growth of a benchmark index OMX Helsinki Cap. Quantitative methods are used in the empirical study and the primary method is to compare logarithmic returns of the shares to logarithmic returns of the index. The material used in this study is based on the open market repurchases made in Finland between 2012 and 2013. The information on them has been compiled from stock exchange releases. The time series data used to assess the value growth of the shares and the index is from Datastream.
The results of the study show that repurchases made in 2012 and 2013 on average clearly beat the benchmark index up to a year and a half. After that the differences between the shares and the index mostly disappear and in most cases the index overtakes repurchased shares in terms of cumulative logarithmic growth before the end of the three-year period.
