Tiivistelmä
IASB:n asettamien IFRS-standardien (International Financial Reporting Standards) ensisijaisena päämääränä on yhtiöiden taloudellisen informaation vertailun helpottaminen kansainvälisesti.
The primary purpose of the IFRS standards set by IASB is to make it easier to compare internationally financial information of companies. The IFRS 8 segment reporting standard has been applied since 1.1.2009. The goal of that standard has been to improve cooperation with IASB and FASB and diminish differences between global segment reporting. Since 2009 have been published many researches on the consequences and the effects of the change of the standard in the segment reporting of companies. The viewpoint of this study differs from that of earlier studies because in this study the main focus is not only to investigate the effects of the change of the standard but the focus is to compare the differences and similarities in the quality of the segment reporting between Nordic industrial companies.
The study is by nature qualitative and is conducted with the help of documentary analysis. This is a descriptive study the goal of which is to form a comprehensive picture on the current state of the segment reporting of the companies. In this study the aim is also to make visible the differences of the companies based on this study. The sample of the study is 67 medium sized and big public listed companies in Finland, Sweden and Denmark. The time period of this research are the years 2008-2015 and empirical material consists of the annual reports of the companies.
The conclusion of this research is that the quality of segment reporting in the Finnish and the Swedish companies is much better compared to the Danish companies. The quality of segment reporting in the Swedish and Finnish is, however, almost the same and there can be seen no remarkable differences between them.
