The purpose of this thesis was to optimize the production inventory management of Mense Oy. The company is located in Luumäki and it produces equipment for wood harvesting. The main goal was to develop a new shelf system which would enable wider usage of enterprise resource planning system. Results corresponding to the purpose were produced using triangulation method. Information was gathered from literature of inventory management, interviews with company’s employees in charge of production and by observing the operation in company’s production space.
Based on the interviews and observing a new warehouse shelf numbering system was created. System enabled creating of shelf map which helps employees to find items and shelf addresses in short order. Main purpose of the new shelf system was to enable saving inventory data in enterprise resource planning system. However, all items could not be placed in to the new system.
Literature references were used to plan improving measures for company’s inventory management. With the knowledge gathered from interviews and observing the operation unnecessary information from literature which did not respond company’s needs was marked out from this thesis. The most valuable results gathered from the literature were usage of machine-readable technologies, categorization of products using ABC-analysis and selection of inventory management technique for different items.
The biggest challenge of this thesis was company’s production capacity which is limited compared to production range. As purposed development of new shelf system was partly accomplished but the company must perform some further actions to achieve the maximum benefits. However, this thesis creates premises for organized development of inventory management.
