Rahastosijoittajan olisi siis kannattanut valitulla tutkimusperiodilla suosia Pohjois-Amerikan osakemarkkinoille sijoittavia rahastoja. This Bachelor’s thesis investigates whether active mutual funds that are registered in Finland have been a better option for investors comparing to passive index funds during a period of 11.4.2011–8.4.2016. In addition, this thesis investigates which stock market by geographical area have been the best option for fund investor during the same period.
The data consists for the total of 24 different funds. Daily returns for the funds were collected from Thomson Reuters Datastream database. The funds performance were compared in terms of calculated average annual income and average annual volatility. The funds performance were also measured by using the well-known risk-adjusted performance measures: Sharpe ratio, Treynor ratio and Jensen’s alpha.
According to the results of the thesis, one cannot make a clear conclusion which investing strategy, active or passive have been a better option for an investor. Comparing the average annual returns and Sharpe ratios the top performing funds were passive index funds, but also the bottom performing funds were passive index funds. Comparing the average annual volatilities, the best performing were made by active funds, but also among the bottom performing funds in terms of volatility, most funds were active funds. Also, comparing the performance using the results of Treynor ratio and Jensen’s alpha, one cannot find any obvious signs of a better performance, comparing active and passive funds to each other.
The results of this thesis showed, that funds which invested into the North American stock market made a much better performance, comparing to funds which invested into the stock markets of Finland, Europe, Japan or into the stock market of emerging countries. The funds which invested into the North American stock market made clearly the best average annual returns. In addition, the level of average annual volatility for the returns were also lowest among those funds, which invested into the North American stock market. Also in the terms of Sharpe ratio these funds made the best performance. So, these funds would have been the best option for investors, during the selected investigation period.
