In recent years, the amount of distributed energy resources (DER) has increased for example due to the prices of photovoltaic systems coming down. This creates more opportunities to take advantage of DERs other than just the electricity consumption of a single consumer. This bachelor’s thesis examines the concept of peer-to-peer electricity trading through literature research and how it actualizes in the real world currently. The theoretical benefits, both financial and technical, of peer-to-peer electricity trading are also examined. The thesis provides one example of creating such a platform based on blockchain. In addition to this three existing platforms relating to the subject are introduced and compared. One of these is a true peer-to-peer platform while the other two allow consumers to buy energy through small-scale production only. Regarding these the financial profitability is compared to a traditional electricity contract.
As a conclusion it is found that that of the introduced platforms, the true peer-to-peer platform is financially viable although an initial investment is required in the form of a photo-voltaic system and a home battery. The other two platforms are not financially viable and are merely for supporting small-scale production of electricity and green energy. As true peer-to-peer platforms become more popular, their technical benefits can be taken advantage of better.
