The topic of this Bachelor’s thesis is the role of electronic procurement in organisations. The purpose for this thesis is to recognise the real benefits and challenges of e-procurement from supply management’s point of view. In addition, this thesis aims to outline the overall picture of how profitable e-procurement methods are for organisations in practice. This thesis is not limited geographically since e-procurement enables global sourcing. The results of this study are based on data collected by interviewing a case organisation, as well as on previously written theories of this topic. The theory section also identifies the means on how companies can measure e-procurements performance. The reason for this is to clarify the comparison made between the real benefits and challenges against previously written theories. The interview was conducted with semistructured research method and the resulting data was transcribed and analysed.
Based on the results, e-procurement creates more benefits than challenges for organisations. Results from previous studies considering the cost reduction and the streamlined procurement process are strongly agreed in this thesis. On this basis, we can conclude, that the role of e-procurement is very important for companies. The results don’t name one challenge over the other, but instead the problems mainly link together, thereby leading to their failure. However, successful implementation of e-procurement creates valuable competitive advantage in today’s global and very competitive market which cannot be ignored in companies.
