The topic of this master thesis was boosting effectiveness of soil sample drying for Eurofins Viljavuuspalvelu Oy. The effects of different factors on drying rate, sample composition and energy usage of drying were tested in this thesis. The factors used were elevated temperature, larger drying surface area and intermitted drying.
The limiting factors in boosting drying efficiency at starting conditions were relatively low drying temperature of 40 C and small drying surface area due to the shape of the sample boxes.
The most important conclusions of the thesis were that larger drying area effects drying rate strongly, and masks strongly the effect of the other factors under it. Compared to the original method intermitted drying kept drying rate stable for longer before slowing down quickly near the end of drying and higher temperature had an opposite effect compared to intermitted drying but comparatively weaker.
The effects of the different factors to sample compositions were slightly changed concentrations, but composition analysis results worked poorly for comparison due to high error margins of 15-20% .
The most important conclusion regarding energy usage was that larger surface area lessened energy required only due to requiring half the time compared to the original drying method. Intermitted drying reduced energy needed due to short periods of being switched on, and half of the active time was spent in upkeep mode. The higher temperature lead directly to need of more energy due to the need for higher heating power.
