Ethical investing has become more popular than decades ago and the number of studies about it have multiplied in the last few years. In this thesis ethical and unethical companies are being compared by their stocks performance between years 2010 and 2015. In this thesis the ethical companies are from the USA and they were collected from Ethispere’s list: “World’s most ethical companies”. The unethical companies were collected from three industries that are: tobacco-, weapon- and alcohol industry. The aim in this research is to find out which kind of companies investors should invest their money to get better return.
The data to this thesis is collected from Reuters Datastream and the actual data is monthly stock price index of these companies that are compared in the thesis. Returns for these groups were calculated monthly. The companies were compared also by volatility, Sharpe ratio, Jensen’s alpha and Treynoy’s index.
The results revealed that ethical companies had a tiny lead compared to unethical companies by almost every calculation between 2010 and 2015. Only weapon industry had better Jensen’s alpha and tobacco companies had better stock returns than ethical companies had. These results from the thesis are showing that the ethical companies might be better investment than unethical companies are. The investors should not blindly follow these results because the gaps were not that big and there’s many other ways to choose unethical companies than only industry.
