Jokainen yritys on huomioinut joukkorahoituskampanjaa tehdessään erityyppisiä etuja, joita joukkorahoituksen myötä on mahdollista saavuttaa. Using crowd as a financial source of enterprises is quite new, but rapidly increasing phenomenon in Finland. This Bachelor’s Thesis concentrates on crowdfunding especially as an alternative source of financing of young startups. The aim of the study was to find out which different factors motivate these enterprises to use crowdfunding. Also, there was some discussion about benefits of equity- and loan-based crowdfunding.
Answers to the research problems were searched using existing literature on the topic and a qualitative research. First part of the study focuses on theories of crowdfunding, mainly based on existing literature. Qualitative research was executed in terms of interviews. Interviewees were Finnish enterprises, which have successfully applied crowdfunding in the past year.
In startups’ point of view there might be some problems with traditional forms of financing. Crowdfunding provides a solution for that. Crowdfunding lowers the barriers for access to the financial market. Crowdfunding is also available for young and high-risk entrepreneurs. Factors of motivation depends on the firm and the form of crowdfunding. Startups that have applied equity-based crowdfunding, appreciate its non-financial benefits, such as visibility in the market and getting connected with its clients. At the same time, startup that has used loan-based crowdfunding as a part of its financial decisions, puts a huge value only on the financial capital. However, every company has taken into consideration different benefits that are possible to gain through crowdfunding. Some of these benefits are not available by using other sources of finance. Crowdfunding should be considered in a larger scale than just a way of financing company.
