Simuloinnit toteutettiin ResMod Toolbox for Parameter Estimation and Process Simulation in Ion Exchange and adsorption –ohjelmalla. Simulointien pohjaksi valittiin ioninvaihtomalli, joka vastasi kokeellisen osan parhaan hartsin tuloksia mahdollisimman tarkasti. Simuloimalla suunniteltiin ioninvaihtoprosessi, jolla voitiin vuorokaudessa käsitellä 1000 L kuparilla konsentroitunutta nitraattiliuosta. The aim of this master thesis was to develop an ion exchange method which can remove divalent copper ions selectively from nitrate-based solution. The method should avoid adsorption of monovalent ions from the solution as they were the desired product. The purpose of this work was to develop and simulate an economical industrial-scale ion exchange process with the presented method. In the literature part factors that affect for removal of copper ions from nitrate solutions are reviewed. In addition, theories of ion exchange and ion exchange processes are introduced in the literature part.
Five different resins were used in experimental part of work. The aim was remove copper ions with high yield and selectively from nitrate-based solution. With every resin sorption and elution experiment stages were performed in fixed bed column. Samples from these stages were taken and analysed with inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Breakthrough- and elution curves were determined for the resins from the received data points. After that dynamic adsorption capacities for copper and monovalent ions were calculated for the resins from the elution curves. Based on the results one of the resins was very selective for copper and therefore it was chosen for designing and simulating of the ion exchange process.
The simulations were executed with program called Resmod Toolbox for Parameter Estimation and Process Simulation in Ion Exchange and adsorption. The simulations were based on a chosen ion exchange model corresponding best to the experimental data. By simulations, an ion exchange process which can treat 1000 L of concentrated copper nitrate solution in a day was designed. Based on the results, the process is both technically feasible and potentially economically viable for industrial applications.
