Tiivistelmä
Teollisuuden jätevesien puhdistaminen on suuri yhteiskunnallinen ongelma, jonka ratkaisemiseksi on kehitelty useita erilaisia ratkaisuja.
The treatment of wastewater in different areas of industry is a big worldwide problem for which many answers have been proposed for. One of the most effective wastewater treatment methods is membrane filtration that can also be combined with other treatment methods. The objective of this thesis is to determine if the Effective Microorganisms(EM) technology is suitable for industrial wastewater treatment together with membrane filtration technologies.
In the theoretical part of this work the history of membrane based wastewater treatment and Effective microorganisms technology is outlined. Also, the current usage and possibilities of these technologies is discussed and analyzed. Some past research is also analyzed along with the possibilities of combining these two technologies.
In the experimental part of this work the effects of EM mud balls, EM1-product and ultrafiltration on slaughterhouse wastewater purification is studied. The changes in nitrate, phosphate, sulfate and chloride in water were measured along with the amount of total nitrogen in the wastewater in the timespan of one week. The experiments were conducted in dark and light conditions.
In all the experiments EM treatment had effect on the amount of nitrate in the diluted wastewater. At near the end of the week long experiment the nitrate concentration had decreased below the initial starting point in most of the experiments. EM treatment also had a lesser effect on the amount of sulfates and chlorides in the wastewater.
Based on the results of the experiments it can be confirmed that EM has an effect on the nutrient concentrations of industrial wastewater. For better results a longer treatment is recommended. The EM-treatment had the most effect on wastewater that had been diluted greatly and where the initial nutrient concentrations were small.
