The aim of this Master’s Thesis is to find out the formation of odorous gases, typical col-lection points, collection systems and the handling of these gases in pulp mill. At the mo-ment this area of research is very topical and important due to the new BAT-document that came into force. The BAT-document defines the best available techniques for the handling and collection of weak and strong odorous gases. The document determines EU members’ environmental permits regarding emission levels. Due to the new BAT-document, mills are required to evaluate their emission status and therefore possibly forced to make more col-lection points in their systems. This, in turn, will bring new market opportunities for suppli-ers of odorous gases collection systems.
In the theoretical part of this research the formation of odorous gases, the most typical col-lection points and their handling in those points are explained. Also the safety procedures of collection and handling are under discussion. In addition, the theoretical part covers the review of BAT-document in more detail. The changes and new requirements for handling and collection of odorous gases, which occurred when the most recent version came into force, are gone through precisely.
The empirical part of this research is based on a pulp mill located in Asia. The most signifi-cant part in covering the objective of this study was visiting the mill. The visit offered an opportunity to get to know to the existing diluted non- condensable gases collection system of the pulp mill. The purpose was to determine and evaluate the operability of the existing system and possible deficiencies in it as well as to find out missing collection points. Addi-tionally the purpose was to go through the procedures relating to the safety of the collection system. Finally, based on the research performed in the empirical part, alternatives and pos-sibilities to improve the pulp mill’s system are presented. The research results indicated that there were some problems at certain points of the collection system, and therefore they would require an update in order to be in accordance with current recommendations.
